But how do you choose what to read when youre feeling fragile or angry or depressed or confused? There are lots of ways to use reading to help you conquer or confront your difficult feelings, and theres no one right way. Here are some suggestions of what to read and how it can help you. Escape If you want your reading to take you away from it all, consider a few things. Romance is a good genre to turn to in times of turmoil because happily-ever-after endings are required in the genre, so you know that everything will turn out okay. If you need a read to comfort and calm and remind you of what love can do in the world, Romance is a good bet. Suggestions: Our First Times: The Books That Made Us Romance Readers. Sometimes you may just want to forget the world exists all together. In that case, go seriously speculative with Science-Fiction or Fantasy. While some books in these genres can be very similar to real life or confront difficult moral issues, others are all about world building and imagination and thats where you should go when you need a break from the world you actually live in. Suggestions: 9 Diverse Fantasy Books That Will Challenge Your Idea of Fantasy Fiction, 7 Standalone Novels for Science-Fiction Lovers. Maybe try a laugh? The comedian memoir/essay genre serves pretty much just one purpose: to make you smile. Also effective: gossipy memoirs by movie stars with juicy tidbits about other movie stars. Suggestions:  Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?,  Ladies Whod Make a Sailor Blush. Frankweiler, everything  Harry Potter. Its also a good time for something fluffy, the book equivalent of a hug. If youre religious, inspirational novels can hit the spot. Books that are described as charming, the ones you give your grandmother, the ones set in quaint English villages or quirky small towns. Examples:  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society,  The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry,  Reading Pathways: Georgette Heyer. If you just want someone to tell you that its going to be okay, there are definitely books that can do that for you. One of our favorites is  Tiny Beautiful Things. Feel Some Feelings If youre feeling numb and need some catharsis, try a weepy. Sad books can be light or dark, sweet or difficult. Theres a broad range between  The Notebook and  A Little Life, so think about the tone, subject, and style that will work best for your mood. Suggestions:  The Books That Made Us Ugly-Sob. Stare Into the Darkness If going for something different or happy just feels wrong, its okay to let yourself read something difficult and sad. If the tragedy around you still hurts too much, you can read something that fits the tone but changes the subject. There are a lot of books that dive into the difficulties of war, racism, and violence in different ways. Or maybe a deep dive right into the issues that hurt so much will help you feel informed and empowered. Fiction and nonfiction can both work. Suggestions: 48 Excellent World War II Novels;  5 Good Books About Race in America; Guns, Politics, and Fear: A Reading List;  Black Speculative Fiction is Protest Work. Keep Your Brain Busy Maybe your mind just cant drop something and you need to keep it occupied. Time to learn. Get yourself some nonfiction stuffed full of interesting facts. If theres a big fat book youve always meant to read but havent quite gotten to yet, now is the time. Suggestions:  The Emperor of All Maladies,  Guns, Germs, and Steel,  The Making of the Atomic Bomb. Do Something Different Having trouble getting into your normal reading? Change it up. Now is an excellent time for comics and graphic novels. Or maybe try audiobooks? Are you normally a prose reader? Try poetry! If youre normally a fiction reader, try nonfiction. The Prison System And The Education Of Our Children

Day after day, millions of inmates are sitting in jail doing nothing productive during their sentence. They only plunge deeper into their criminal ways; they aren’t given any methods to truly rehabilitate themselves or prepare themselves to reenter into society. We are paying to house these inmates every year, and all they are doing is repeatedly coming back. The United States has the highest population of incarcerated people. Unfortunately, we have begun to spend more on the prison system than the education of our children. In order to be fiscally responsible, it is important that we change the way that prisons are run so we can decrease the amount of recidivism and make sure that those inmates are fully prepared to reenter into society and have the confidence to achieve their new goals. Prisons were created to keep those who aren’t able to function as law abiding citizens out of society. There are some people who should be put in jail for their crimes. They’re there because of a mistake they made, but they shouldn’t be defined by their past mistakes for their whole lives. But where is the line drawn on who is a danger to society and who has needs real medical help for their mental issues. The President of Stop the Crime, Charles J. The decline of the traditional family nucleus should only prove that option was only for a few. I have to admit that I come from that type of nucleus. My dad worked and my mom stayed home with me and my sister. Times were very different in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The economy to day is teaching families how to adjust to new trends and new ways of living. We should appreciate the new forms of family and community that are occurring. Since the onset of the financial crisis there has been an increase in the number of multi-generational families. It’s the new normal. Younger adults live with their parents into their 30’s now and approximately 50 million Americans are in multigenerational households, that’s a 10% increase from 2007. Economic circumstances, as well as other cultural factors, have no doubt influenced families to start incorporating widowed grandparents, unemployed in-laws and adult children back into a common home. Life on life’s terms has incorporated the return of extended family formations. Another reason for extended families is the current epidemic of teenage pregnancies. And while the teenage mother is affected by the circumstance, this issue affects the entire family. Issues of trust, financial stress, and decision making are all factors involved. Some research suggests that women who have children at an early age are no worse off than similar women who wait to have children. According to this research, many of the disadvantages set up for young mothers are related to their own lack of everything during upbringing. This research suggests that it would be unwise to relate all of the problems faced by teen mothers to their youth. But the truth is that other research proves that teen mothers are less likely to finish high school, less likely to ever marry, and more likely to have additional children outside marriage. Thus, an early birth is not just a marker of preexisting problems but it may prove to be a barrier to successive upward mobility. I have seen success stories with teenage girls who choose to keep their children. But even if married, these women face much higher rates of poverty and dependence on government assistance than those decide to wait. And early marriages are much more likely to end in divorce. So marriage, while it may be helpful in establishing the family nucleus that is so longed for in Western civilization, is no verified solution. Now I would like to discuss my idea on a program for change in the family. Social inequality will continue to exist without bold action. We need to empower families to take charge of their lives and shift perception of people to understand that families that come from an unconventional family nucleus are still valued citizens. Government, business, community, education are all sectors that can benefit from an improvement in circumstance of the institution of family. College Admissions Essay - I Grew Up with Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson was a part of my household ever since I can recall. She was introduced to me quite dramatically. Although my usual sense of the passing of time was marked by the typical events in the life of a young boy (first day of school, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and so on), when my mother spontaneously broke into verse, the effect was like that of being transported in a time machine. Years later, a professor of mine claimed the most radical form of distance learning was the book for it could transport one across time, not merely space. But experiencing my mother’s sojourns was much more conspicuous than quietly reading century-old poetry to oneself. Through the spoken word, I felt the past entering the present. The effect was mesmerizing, as though there was ... ...owing me a book she had won for receiving the English prize in her high school. It was The Collected Plays of James Barrie. I asked her who he was, and she told me that he had written Peter Pan. At the time, I was a bit disappointed to find that out. I had thought the flying boy had just always been there. But no. He was the creation of the flight of an author’s imagination. After my initial disappointment, though, I became aware that plays and books and poems didn’t come from nowhere, but from people who had the ability to tap into their creativity and give it shape. Through dozens of dinner table encounters, my mother helped me realize something about human nature and inventiveness. A setting that respects the roles of both imagination and reality makes the world a more rewarding and interesting place. Such a setting bears an eerie resemblance to Never Never Land.

Moreover, is the act an ethical or not and would the payments be in violation of Carolina Pad’s Mission and Values statement. Finally, if she declined the bloggers’ request while questioning their ethical standards, would her relationship with any of the bloggers become strained? 2- April firmly believed the promotional considerations theses bloggers were offering could provide a significant higher rate of return for Carolina Pad than the company could receive from others such as advertising. Also, she realized that her competitors were receiving similar requests from these or other bloggers, and many of them were benefiting already from paying such requests. But, April also thinks that there are some dishonest about the whole situation and bloggers didn’t promised a favorable reviews and if is an ethical scenario or not. 3- If April agreed to pay the bloggers, the following stakeholders will be effected: a. Bloggers will be satisfied and received money for their job b. Carolina Pad company reputation and revenues will rise if the review is good, but it might enter in unethical stage which will affect its mission and values statement. c. Customers will be willing to buy more of the company products due to the good reviews. d.
